Confirmation of Payee

Confirmation of Payee

What is Confirmation of Payee (CoP)?

Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a name checking service for UK based payments which provides customers (both personal and business) greater assurance that they are sending payments to the intended recipient, helping to avoid making accidental, misdirected payments to the wrong account holder, as well as providing another layer of protection in the fight against fraud and scams. All mortgage and savings accounts have been automatically opted into CoP.

How do I make a payment?

When making a payment to your Mortgage and / or Savings account you should use the following details:

Sort Code: 16-16-22
Account Number: 11758805
Name: Insert your full name
Reference: Insert your 10 digit Mortgage / Savings account number, removing any dashes from the number

If you are paying into a Business Savings or Business Mortgage account you will need to also select that the payment is going to a Business Account as the payee account type. If going to a personal account you do not select this option.

What will I see?

CoP is an additional step in the payment process to ensure you’ve checked the Payee details. When you’re ready to send your payment to your account with us you will see one of the following responses:

Match - the name on the account matches and you can continue with the payment if you’re happy to do so

Close match - this means that the name on the account or the account type (Personal or Business) of the person you are paying doesn’t exactly match what you have provided, this could be a simple spelling mistake or an abbreviated name. You can contact the intended recipient to check the details before making the payment or update the details to the ones provided if you want to, rather than contacting the recipient.

No match - the payee’s name details don’t match the name on the account. It’s very important that you double check the payee’s details by contacting the person or business you are trying to pay to make sure you’re sending funds to the right place. You can still make the payment, but if you are in any doubt, don’t continue.

What if I am paying into a joint account?

Enter the full name of at least one person named on the account.

Paying into a new account with us?

A name match is possible immediately so you should be able to input the details as per the account set up and receive a positive match.

Why is the sort code for the Royal Bank of Scotland?

All our money transfers are processed through a Collection Account with The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Can I opt out of CoP?

You can request to opt out of CoP. However, we will only agree to opt out requests in exceptional circumstances. If you opt out of CoP your account will not be checked when another person or business tries to make a payment to it which could potentially increase the risk of payments being paid to the wrong account(s).

To opt out of CoP you need to complete this form and either post to us, email to: CoPInstructions@chorleybs.co.uk or hand in at your branch.

You will receive an acknowledgement of your request and we will confirm if we have agreed to your request within 1 calendar month of receiving it.

Once we have made our decision, we will confirm this to you in writing.

This opt out request will only apply to the accounts you have listed on the form at the time of the request, any new accounts opened after this time would need a new form submitting to opt out.

If your opt-out request is approved, you can opt back into CoP at any time by using this form.

What if I want to opt out or back in to a joint account?

To opt out or opt back in to any joint accounts, we will also need the authority of the joint account holder on a separate form.

Can a Power of Attorney or Court of Protection opt out of CoP on my behalf

If there is a Power of Attorney or Court of Protection registered on the account, we will allow them to complete the request. We will also allow this is the case of a CTF or JISA Manager. To action this they will need to complete the form and follow the above process.

Can a Savings Account Operator opt out of CoP on my behalf?

No, we will not allow any other third party to action a request to opt out of CoP. The request would need to come from the account holder(s).

Help protect yourself against fraud

Please only make payments if you are satisfied it is going to the correct account and genuine payee. Do not feel pressured into making a payment, especially if there is a “No Match” payee.
