Cookie Policy

About this Cookie Policy

Our website uses cookies to distinguish you from other people who use our website. This helps Chorley and District Building Society to provide you with a good experience and helps us to improve our site. Our cookie policy provides an explanation of how and why we use cookies.

When we use terms such as ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ in this notice, we mean Chorley and District Building Society.

This cookie policy is broken down into the following sections:

•    What are Cookies?
•    What types of Cookies do we use?
•    Consent
•    Further information about cookies
•    Cookie List

What are Cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your electronic device (computer, laptop, tablet, phone) when you visit a website. These cookies are stored on your device when the website is loaded on your browser.

Cookies are widely used and help websites to run more efficiently and provide a better user experience, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site.

Cookies can be useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device and change the format of the website to suit that device. They also help to make the website function properly, be more secure, provide better user experience, and understand how the website performs. This information is used to create a better user experience.

We use two types of cookies:
Session Cookies: When you visit our website, ‘session cookies’ are placed on your computer for the time you spend on the website and are removed when you close your browser.

Persistent Cookies: These remain on your computer for a longer period until they are set to expire (usually after 12 months) or until you use the browser function to clear cookies.

What are ‘first-party’ and ‘third-party’ cookies?
Whether a cookie is ‘first’, or ‘third’ party refers to the website or domain placing the cookie.

First-party cookies are set directly by the website you are visiting. For example, cookies on the Chorley Building Society Website are set by the Chorley Building Society.

Some of our services are reliant upon cookies set by other websites and these are known as third-party cookies, and they can set cookies as well. For example, because we use an externally embedded webpage (iframe) to display our independent Smart Money People rating, a Customisation Cookie called bigbite_session is downloaded as a result. This cookie detects whether a user is logged in to the smartmoneypeople.com website. No personally identifiable information is stored, and this cookie is deleted as soon as you close your web browser.

Strictly Necessary Cookies
Strictly necessary cookies, also known as essential cookies, are essential for basic website functionality. They ensure a good user experience and safeguard data security. Unlike other types of cookies (such as performance, functional, and targeting cookies), strictly necessary cookies don’t track user behaviour for analytics or advertising purposes.

We use these cookies to enable you to move around our website and use its features, such as allowing secure access to your logged in areas of the website. Without these cookies, services you have asked for cannot be provided.

Performance Cookies
Performance cookies, also known as analytics cookies, are a type of web cookie used to gather data on how individuals interact with websites, for example, which pages individuals go to most. These cookies don’t collect information that identifies individual members, instead, they focus on monitoring the website performance and the actions our members take while navigating the website.

We use these cookies to improve how our website works. They help us understand how our website is used so we can improve customer experience, improve the content, and understand what errors come up, so we can fix them.

Functional Cookies
Functional cookies are used to enhance the performance of websites as without them certain functions of the website may not be available. However, they are not vital for a website to run, but they enable important information and user’s preferences can be remembered. Information can include login data, region, language, and enhanced content.

We use these cookies to allow the website to remember choices you make (such as your username, language, or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. For example, these cookies can be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts, and other parts of web pages that you can control. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for, such as watching a video, or to remember information that you have already provided on previous visits to a website.

Targeting Cookies
Targeting cookies, also known as advertising cookies, are specifically designed to gather information from your device to display advertisements to you based on relevant topics that interest you. For example, if you are looking for a savings account, you might see more advertisements for savings accounts because the cookie has detected this is what you are looking for.

Targeting cookies are usually placed by third parties such as advertising networks with the website operator’s permission, so they are usually linked to site functionality provided by the third-party organisation.

The information these cookies gather on you can be shared with other advertisers to measure the performance of their advertisements. They also build user profiles from visitors to the website to gather statistics on the performance of the advertisements that can carry across many websites.

We use targeting cookies to identify how effective our advertising is and provide you with information in the future that we believe is relevant or may be of interest to you. If we work with a third-party company, for example to get customer feedback or social networking, that third-party organisation may set their own cookies which are controlled by them and covered by their own policies. Chorley Building Society is not responsible for the content of external websites.

Cookies are needed to allow you to get the full experience from our website and services but before we can store cookies on your computer or other device, we need your consent. When you visit our website for the first time, you will be presented with a Cookie Banner, telling you that our website uses cookies. This will stay in place until you either accept cookies or manage your preferences.

By default, necessary cookies are always turned On. The rest of the cookies (Performance, Functional and Targeting, see above for more information about these) are turned Off unless you choose to change the setting.

By clicking on Accept All, you agree to our use of the four types of cookies – (Strictly Necessary, Performance, Functional, Targeting).

By clicking on Reject All, you can reject all cookies except for necessary cookies. Without these necessary cookies, the website will not work.

Your preferences will expire after 12 months, at which point the banner will re-appear to ask again for your consent. You can also review or change your cookie preferences at any time by clicking on the cookie symbol, located in the left-hand corner of each web page.
